[Denver, CO] - August 26, 2022 - The forthcoming full-length, entitled ‘Oh No,’ is a collection of songs that lyricist Sean Culliton wrote about his struggles with anxiety throughout his mid 20s. He was inspired to finish the album during COVID when he realized that many of his personal struggles were reflected in the rest of the world.
‘Oh No’ furthers Retrofette’s sound and aesthetic, adding heavy sampling to the ever-present synthesizers and upbeat grooves. Can’t Stop, Talktalk, and Housemuzak (all released as singles) retain the catchy earworm hooks typical of the group, but find the band in a more contemplative and ambitious place.
The album format allows Retrofette to stretch out artistically on tracks like Home Again, Home Again, a wilting track about feeling isolated while in a relationship, and Sumacbeat, a sound collage of sorts that chronicles a night of playing a live show and the anxieties surrounding the fear of failure.
Retrofette stays true to the band’s mission statement. They know that we’re all going through a thing right now, and think we should dance about it. Struggles with depression, dread, and anxiety are as much in their DNA as Grace Jones, Memphis Milano, synthesizers, and turtlenecks. The band’s recognition of the darkness in the world, and their unrelenting optimism in its face is what has endeared their danceable synthpop to audiences in their hometown, and across the country.
